Planning | Digital Presence considerations |
- plan this activity as you would any other activity
- a good rule of thumb for allotted time is 90% on the actual writing process and 10% on the media application.
- pre-screen the visualization tool and its features.
- if classroom registration on the website is required, do so well in advance of the writing activity
- prior to moving to the online work, demonstrate the tool with your
class as a whole.
|
- check the terms of use for each digital tool - the ownership of the presentation produced and child safety considerations.
- what age can students use the website – A number of websites are only for 13 years of age and older.
- Is there a gallery? Check for inappropriate content.
- examine the privacy concerns for students in any online registration required.
- look for classroom registration options, to manage FOIP concerns.
- address copyright issues with regard to images and other media students wish to upload.
- examine saving and posting requirements and/or policies in light of child privacy and safety.
- consider the issue of private or public publishing.

| first steps in using visualization tools |
 |
Identify your purposeWhat are your specific learner expectations [SLEs] in having students translate their writing content into a visual representation? Ensure that your SLE's can be met with the tool. |
 |
Determine the writing contentWhat will you have students write to represent visually with the visualization tool? Will you have them use an existing piece of writing, or will they write specifically for the activity? |
 |
The writing processStudents write, rewrite, and continue the writing process through the necessary drafts. Teacher guidance and preparation will be essential, given the nature of the visualization tools. |
| using the web 2.0 tool |
 |
Review the toolSince many of these tools have limited editting capabilities, students should be guided/explore the features and limitations of the tool. |
 |
Enter the text Students should create their original document in a digital format, which they have saved. Students will then enter the text into the visualization tool through an upload or cut and paste process. |
 |
Adjust the contentStudents will add effects [colour, font, shape, etc.], or make modifications such as adding or reducing text, keeping in mind that any effects added to the publication should enhance the meaning of the visual representation. |
 |
Save, print, post and/or downloadStudents will print, save or download their publication when finished. Note that if posting online is available or compulsory, it is important to remind students to use a screen name and ensure that there is no identifiable information about the creator in the publication. |
