There can be outstanding opportunities provided for student learning through digital storytelling. This resource is intended to provide teacher support in planning and processing.

Digital Presence considerations

  • plan this writing activity as you would any other writing activity
  • a good rule of thumb for allotted time is 60% on the actual writing process and 40% on the media application.
  • pre-screen the digital stortytelling tool and its features.
  • if classroom registration on the website is required, do so well in advance of the writing activity
  • planning should be constructed with the program specifics (themes, characters, backgrounds, recordability, images etc) in mind.
  • prior to moving to the online work, demonstrate the tool with your class as a whole.
  • check the terms of use for each digital tool - the ownership of the story produced and child safety considerations.
  • see if controls are in place to address inappropriate content.
  • examine the privacy concerns for students in any online registration required.
  • look for classroom registration options, to manage FOIP concerns.
  • address copyright issues with regard to images and other media students wish to upload to a story.
  • examine saving and posting requirements and/or policies in light of child privacy and safety.

step 1.

Write the initial story

Students write, rewrite, and continue the writing process through the necessary drafts. The most effective digital stories come from sound writing practices.
step 2.

Script the story

Students develop a script which is a distillation of the essential components of the narrative story. This script provides the basis for the story, and allows students to add multimedia elements in the digital version, providing the best representation of the narrative.

Plan the storyboard

A storyboard is used to visually "sketch out" the actions of a story. Generally storyboards are fairly linear, and run along a straight line from beginning to end. However, more sophisticated storyboards can be multi-dimensional and can be planned using organizers like concept mapping tools.

step 4.

Arrange and edit the images/add images

Many sites provide images. If there is an opportunity to upload an image, students will have to search for and use images that are copyright free. It is important to remember that the images used add to the meaning of the story.

Record the story text

Students will record their story using the tools on the site. If an audio recording tool is available, it is important for students to consider the pacing of their voice when recording.
step 6.

Add available effects and transitions

Students will add effects and transitions when appropriate keeping in mind that any effects added to the story should enhance the meaning rather than take away from the digital story.

Save, print, post and/or download

Students will print, save or download their story when finished. It is important to remember when students are posting online to use a screen name and ensure that there is no identifiable information about the creator in the story.
