German speaking Europeans came from Poland, Germany, France, Prussia, Russia,
Switzerland, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Luxembourg and many more places.
Many arrived by ship and then traveled inland by horse and wagon and
later on possibly by train. Some of the first German settlers moved
to Canada (including Alberta) in 1882. Their influence in Alberta settlement is evidenced by
names of some German communities in Alberta: Bruederfeld, Bruderheim,
Duesseldorf, Waldheim, Bismarck, Gruenthal and Hoffnungsau. Learn more about German history in Alberta by checking out these online resources.
