Title of Presentation
bullet     In planning my presentation, I will:
determine and narrow my topic; receive approval if necessary.
consider the intended audience for my presentation
consider the assignment requirements set out by the teacher.
develop a timeline to allow for research, composition and creation of the presentation, building in time for technical glitches along the way.
make a content outline
evaluate available media and select the type of media I will use, if any
acquire the skills to use the appropriate technology (See Teacher Tools@2Learn.ca)
check out the presentation room, if different than my classroom.
create a storyboard of ideas to link my content with the technology I will use.
decide if the selected technology will work with my topic, my audience, my presentation room and my skills.
ask myself how I would complete my presentation -- Plan B -- without the use of the technology (should it fail, be unavailable, etc.)
bullet     Prior to delivering my presentation, I will:
arrange with my instructor to book the necessary equipment/demonstration room.
arrange with my instructor to load my presentation on the workstation or network that I will be using.
arrange with my instructor to test my presentation on the workstation or network that I will be using to present, so that I may make necessary minor adjustments (colour, font, size, etc).
make multiple copies of the presentation, using different names, as a safety measure so that I have back-up copies. (Avoid stress and disaster! If one version becomes corrupt, you can simply choose one of your back-up copies to present.)
prepare a simple evaluation form for my audience to review my presentation.
organize all props and materials I need and have them in place.
practise delivering my presentation in front of my parents or a friend, focusing on voice, emphasis and timing.
select appropriate clothing which suits the occasion. (Choose something confortable that allows you to feel the least stress in the situation -- avoid wearing something brand-new!)
bullet     In creating my presentation, I will:
research the content (see Research! Senior High Source@2Learn.ca for guidance)
compose the content (see Compose! Senior High Source@2Learn.ca for guidance)
review the content for its grammar, spelling, appropriate language, and punctuation.
construct the presentation using text, images and/or other media
review the presentation, asking these questions:
  • Is the message clear, interesting and informative to the viewer? (Review your presentation content with a friend)
  • Do you need to edit, delete or add to the content of your presentation?
  • Is your presentation visually pleasing in terms of colour, graphics, layout, etc.
  • Does your finished presentation still meet the assignment requirements, including length?
  • (see also Evaluating a Speech)

bullet    In delivering my presentation, I will:
be there before the presentation, to double-check my equipment operation, increase my comfort-level, and check for lighting and sound.
prepare myself mentally for the presentation, using personal strategies to focus my energy...take deep breaths, visualize my presentation, etc.
introduce my presentation confidently, ensuring that I speak clearly and at a pace which is comfortable to the audience.  I will avoid using "um" at all costs!
make eye contact with my audience.   [If you are feeling nervous, try focusing on a spot at the back of the room.
not panic if my equipment fails. I will attempt to continue the presentation, with the assistance of my instructor.  If all else fails..I will go to "plan B".
in closing, thank my audience and ask if there are any questions.
ensure that the equipment is prepared for the next presenter, or is moved off to one side.
do what is necessary to return the equipment and presentation room back to the condition I found it in.

bullet     In evaluating my presentation, I will:
identify the strengths of my presentation, both in the content and the method of delivery. (For example, did your PowerPoint presentation include all of the content you wanted to share?) See Self-evaluation tool.
consider what the audience seemed to enjoy the most about my presentation.
determine whether the whole presentation achieved the effect I had hoped for, including my management of the time I was allotted. For example, did I spend too much time on the first part of my presentation and then had to rush through to cover the balance of the content.
identify the areas of the presentation that were weak -- that did not create the effect that I hoped it would and try to determine the cause.
evaluate what I learned in this interaction between myself as the presenter and the audience -- about my personal style, about my comfort with the technology, about my delivery of the content,  etc.
review my completed evaluation forms from my peers and determine if the feedback provided me with insights as to how I could improve my next presentation style or content.
make note of what I have learned in this process, so that I can build on my strengths and avoid the pitfalls that occurred in this presentation.
