The art of the decorated egg, or the pysanka, dates back to around 4000 B.C. The people who lived in the region now known as Ukraine worshiped the sun. It warmed the earth and was a source of all life. Eggs decorated with nature symbols were chosen for sun worship ceremonies. About 980, after many people became Christians, the eggs became traditions and symbols of Easter and Christ.

Many of the paintings and shapes on the eggs are symbols. Look at the eggs to see an example of what each symbol looks like.
